Nanna

aka 'Goddess of Flowers and Vegetation'. In Arthurian legend she is the wife of 'Baldur' who was killed by 'Hodur'. According to legend Nanna died of grief at her loss and travelled with him to 'Hel'. 'Hermod' tried to rescue Baldur from Hel, asking Nanna to return with him. She chose to stay with her husband, but sent an embroidery in return to be taken to the earth-plane.

Naoisi

aka 'Naoise'. She was the beloved of 'Deirdriu' (See Deirdriu), but he was killed by 'Eoghan' on the request of 'Conchobar' (See Conchobar) who desired her attentions.

Nasciens

aka 'Seraphe'. A hermit character who was said to have come to Britain with 'Joseph of Arimathea' (See Joseph of Arimathea) from Arthurian legend who was given the name Nasciens when converted to Christianity. He is portrayed as was commited to The Grail duties, appearing in many of the later Grail legends as an advisor to 'Grail Knights' (See Grail Knights) counselling them on their experiences. Believed to have been baptised by Joseph of Arimathea his work is detailed in the 'Estoire del saint Graal' which prophecies 'Galahad's' (See Galahad) achievement of becoming a 'Grail Knight' (See Grail Knight).

Under the name Seraphe he is known to have been a Pagan Lord but there is little information on this.

His presumption at being worthy enough to look into 'The Grail' (See Grail) was attacked and Nasciens was struck blind. His blindness was healed by the 'Grail Lance' (See Hallows).

Husband of 'Elaine' (See Elaine de Garlot), son-in-law of 'Igraine' (See Igraine) and 'Gerlois' (See Gerlois), who eventually reconciled with 'King Arthur' (See Arthur).

Nephthys

In ancient Egyptian mythology 'Nephthys' is the sister of 'Osiris, God of the not-dead', (See Osiris) and sister of 'Isis, Great Mother of Egypt' (See Isis), who accompanies the body of her dead brother to Aalu in the sacred barque.

Father of 'Conchobar mac Nessa' (See Dechtire), husband of 'Cathbad'.

Niall

aka 'Niall of the Nine Hostages'. Son of 'King Eochu Muigmedon of Tara' and 'Cairenn'. In Irish legend he was one of five sons to the king, (he was illegitimate but accepted as a son). His step-mother was 'Mongfind' (See Mongfind) who demanded that all the heirs be tested to see which one would be fit to be the next king.

The first test required the boys to enter a blazing forge, known to belong to 'Sithchean' the Druid and smith overseeing the test. The boys each had to return with whatever article they wanted to rescue from the forge. Whilst the brothers brought out an array of pieces from the forge only Niall thought to bring out the tools and the anvil, and therefore he was declared the winner of the test.

A second test was set for the boys. This time the need to survive was imperative as they were sent to enter a forest to find their own food and shelter, and to provide their own protection. As time drew on the boys began to grow thirsty, and so approached a well said to have guarded by an old crone. Only Niall had the courage to approach her and provide her with a kiss as requested in exchange for the water. Immediately the old crone turned into the physical form of 'Sovereignty' (See Sovereignty), known to have been a beautiful woman to behold. As a result of his actions Niall was granted the union of kingship and Sovereignty being declared the rightful heir.

Niamh

Husband of 'Conganchas', and daughter of 'Celtchair'. (See Conganchas mac Daire). She is said to have married Conganchas to find the truth about how he could be defeated.

In Irish legend she is the daughter of 'Manannan' (See Manannan) who entices 'Oisin' to 'Tir Na n'Og' (See Tir Na n'Og), the Otherworld (See Otherworld). She provided him with a horse so that he could return to briefly visit his old home (See Oisin).

Nine Worthies

Arthur is included as one of the Nine Worthies, of Latin origin, which feature in much of the literature which was popularised during the Middle Ages expounding the qualities of the hero in three classic areas. The heroes names were revered as supreme deities or men of true hero status. Each person was said to possess a pure and virtuous nature.

Biblical : Joshua, David, Judas Maccabaeus.
Historical : Hector, Alexander, Julius Caesar.
Christian : Charlemagne, Arthur, Godfrey of Bouillon.

Nissien

'The Peaceful'. In Welsh legend he was the son of 'Llyr' (See Llyr), brother of 'Efnissien' (See Efnissien), 'Branwen' (See Branwen), 'Bran' (See Bran the Blessed).

Nodens

According to Celtic legend this character is seen to be similar to 'Nuadu' (See Nuadu). Associated with 'Llyr' (See Llyr), 'Lludd Llaw Eraint' (See Llyr) and 'Gwynn ap Nudd' (See Gwynn ap Nudd).

Believed to have founded a sanctuary at Lydney, Gloucestershire. Perhaps a Celtic God Of Water, but is revered for having been a God of Healing.

Norns

She is one of the three Goddesses representing the past, present and future, a triple aspect goddess. Referred to by the Saxons as one of the 'Wyrdes' (comprising of a giantess, an elf and a dwarf).

Nuadu

aka 'Airgetlam' meaning Silver Hand. 'King of the Tuatha de Danaan' (See Tuatha de Danaan). Associated with 'Llyr'. (See Llyr). Whilst in battle with the 'Firbolgs' his hand was severed, hence his tie with 'Sovereignty' (See Sovereignty) was severed also.

He had become a 'Wounded King' (See Wounded King). 'Diancecht' (See Diancecht) and 'Credne' made him a hand from silver which is how his pseudonym came to be formed.

This character of Irish origin has been seen to similar to 'Nodens' (See Nodens).

Nudd

'Lord of the Faery Realm', husband of 'Seli' and the father of 'Gwyn' (See Gwynn ap Nudd).
