Igraine

aka 'Ygraine', 'Egraine', 'Igerna'. Daughter of 'Amlaudd Wledig'.

Originally married to 'Gorlois' (See Gerlois). Believed to have been the mother of three daughters - 'Morgan Le Fay' (See Morgan le Fay), 'Morgause' (See Morgause), and 'Elaine of Garlot' (See Elaine of Garlot) born in her first marriage to Gorlois.

According to legend she is said to have conceived 'Arthur' (See Arthur) after 'Uther' had approached 'Merlin' (See Merlin) to make him appear as her husband. She was deceived, but later married 'Uther, High King of Britain' (See Uther Pendragon) after Gorlois died.

Illtyd

aka.Illtud.Welsh teacher of many early Celtic Church saints, monks, abbots and personages. His name is thought to derive from 'Ille ab omni crimine tutus', meaning 'the one safe from all evil'. Of the fourth-century, and perhaps a 'Prince of Powys' who became a monk. Believed to have been one of the guardians of the 'Holy Grail' (See Grail), along with 'Cadoc', thought to be one of Arthur's cousins and Knights. 'Nennius' (See Nennius) makes reference to him in his 'Historia Britonum' believed to have been written in the ninth-century.

Illytd's tomb was reputed to have been lost. The reason for this may be connected with an event that is supposed to have happened to Illytd when he was praying in a cave near the sea, perhaps 'Tintagel'(See Tintagel) in Cornwall. He is said to have -

'met with two men who carried the body of a holy man
with an altar floating above his face'.

The men were reputed to have said to Illytd -

'This man of God charged us to bring him to thee
and to bury him with thee,
and that thou shouldst not reveal his name to anyone
for fear lest men should swear by him.'

The holy man is believed by many to have been the 'once and future king' - 'Arthur' (See Arthur).

(See Mystical-WWW Mystical Time : Dates, 6 November for more information on Illtyd).

Indract

Monk of the early Celtic Church. 'King Ina, Saxon King of Wessex' is believed to have ordered that Indract's body be buried in a pyramid of stone on the left-hand side of the altar in the 'Old Wattle Church', Glastonbury (See Glastonbury), with Patrick on the right. Revered at Glastonbury Abbey (See Glastonbury) where his tomb is thought to be and where he was known to have been listed in a book at the Abbey entitled 'Life of St. Indract'. Ironside

aka 'Ironsides'. Described in Arthurian legend as an aged experienced warrior, who is perhaps more commonly known by the title the 'Red Knight of the Red Lands'. He is reputed to have laid siege to 'Lady Lynette Lyonesse' (See Lady Lynette Lyonesse), defeated by 'Gareth' (See Gareth). Attributed to be a solar hero.

Iseult of Brittany

aka 'Ysolde of Brittany', 'Isoult of the White Hands', 'Ysolde of the White Hands', 'Iseult of the Fair Hands'. Said in some legends to be the daughter of 'Hoel of Brittany' and 'Duke Jovelin of Arundel', and to have had a brother named 'Kahedrin'.

There is much confusion surrounding this character in Arthurian legend as the writer 'Malory' (See Malory) was responsible for introducing the development of the name 'Iseult' to 'Iseult of Brittany'. She was the wife of 'Tristan' (See Tristan). They met after Tristan had been chased and banished from Cornwall after his incestuous affair, under enchantment, with his aunt 'Isolt of Ireland' (See Isolt) who was married to 'Mark, King of Cornwall' (See Mark).

Isis

Sister of 'Osiris' who was the ancient Egyptian 'God of the not-dead'. She accompanies the body of her dead brother in the sacred barque to 'Aalu'.

Also known as the 'Great Mother of all Nature', the 'Great Mother of Egypt', 'Queen of the Earth', 'The Moon', 'The Moon Goddess', 'Goddess of Life and Healing', 'Mistress of the Underworld', 'Fruitful Mother', 'Mistress of the Elements', a sorceress and a priestess/physician.

Some have suggested that her work as a healing goddess can be related to 'Brigid', the healing Celtic Goddess, who has been associated with 'Guinevere' (See Guinevere). (See Mystical-WWW Mystical Time : Dates, 1 February for more information on Brigid).

Isolt

aka 'Isolt of Ireland', 'Lady Belle Isoult', 'Iseult of Ireland', 'Isolde of Ireland', 'Iseult', 'Isolde', 'Ysolde the Fair'.

A heroine of Norman Arthurian romance. Daughter of 'Angwish, King of Ireland' (See Angwish). Believed to be the wife of 'King Mark of Cornwall' (See Mark). 'Tristan', her future nephew, was sent to Ireland by Mark to fetch Isolt in order for him to marry her. Isolt and Tristan though became lovers after they drank a love potion which was supposed to be for the married couple.

The affair continued after the marriage of Isolt and Mark (See Brangaine). The two lovers fled to the forest. Mark eventually forgave Isolt, but Tristan was barred from Cornwall. The potion was said to have been made by Isolt's mother, provided by 'Brangaine', Isolt's personal maid (See Brangaine). She is said to have died of a broken heart on hearing the news of Tristan's death. (See Tristan).

Also reputed to be the desired love of 'Palomides' (See Palomides).

The name 'Isolt' has become most commonly confused with 'Iseult' as a result of the writer 'Malory's' (See Malory) reworking of the Arthurian romance.

Ither

In later Grail romances, Ither is identified as a nephew of 'Arthur' (See Arthur) who desired to claim the throne of Britain. Said to have stolen a sacred golden cup but was killed for his desires and actions by 'Perceval' (See Perceval).
