Jesus Christ

According to the Christian belief, Jesus visited Britain, perhaps Cornwall, England, as a young boy with 'Joseph of Arimathea' (See Joseph of Arimathea).

Following the Crucifixion it is believed that Joseph travelled to 'Glastonbury' (See Glastonbury) carrying with him the sacred relics of Christ's crucifixion which has since been known to be a place of pilgrimage and perhaps the location of 'The Holy Grail' (See Grail).

Joseph of Arimathea

Father of 'Josephus' (See Josephus) according to Arthurian legend as told in the 'Grand Saint Greal'. He is reported to have taken he body of Jesus Christ to his tomb, which as a member of the Sanhedrin was a risk. Said to have been imprisoned for twelve years because of his action, and this is when the first mention of The Christian Grail occurs, as Joseph said that the only reason he was alive after the imprisonment was because of the Holy Grail.

According to legend, he is believed to have been the first 'Guardian of The Grail' (See Grail King) and 'The Chalice' (See Grail) and the sacred relics of the Crucifixion. Believed to have travelled to Glastonbury following his release with these relics and to have established a Christian community here together with the erection of the first Christian church in Glastonbury, often referred to as the 'Old Wattle Church' (See Glastonbury). Reputed to have planted his staff on 'Wearyall Hill' (See Glastonbury) which transformed into a 'Thorn Tree', later known as the 'Glastonbury Thorn' (See Glastonbury), the original is alleged to have been removed during the English Civil War.

'Robert de Borron'(See Robert de Borron), 'Map' (See Map) and 'Malory' (See Malory) have been identified as being the leading romance writers who developed the importance and role of Joseph in Arthurian legend.
