In US the chestnut is also known as the 'buckeye’, perhaps becuase for many centuries the eye hs been connected with magiacal powers. The horsechestnut has been preuted to alleviate back pain, rheumatism and arthritis. Carrying a conker in your pocket in Britain and Europe is believed to be due to such associations.
