Birds
GEESE : If this bird flies around the house it is said to be a death omen and if it hisses or quacks more than normal it is said that rain is on the way. Yet the goose also has a legendary reputation for being a silly bird, hence the phrase 'a silly goose'. 'Michaelmas Day', September 29, (See Mystical WWW Folk Calendar) is a traditional festival day in England (UK) when goose is eaten. If the breast bones of the goose are brown after roasting the following winter should be mild, but if the bones are white or have a slight blue hue then the winter will be severe.
Traditional Verse
'Whosoever eats goose on Michaelmas Day,
Shall never lack money his debts to pay.'

GOLDEN PLOVER : This bird has a religious significance as it is said that the golden plover contains the souls of all Jews who took part in the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ. As a result the bird is seen to be a sad and wandering bird, being able to find no rest. The call of the golden plover is a melancholy one, and in Wales (UK) it is traditionally believed to be a death omen.
