U
UNICORN
The mythological unicorn was a symbol of chivalry with qualities befitting this status,
proud and untameable. It is not thought to be British in origin despite it's royal
connections. There are many representations of this creature in ancient manuscripts, and
has long been the subject of discourse as to whether or not it existed. It was traditionally
believed that the delicate unicorn could only be caught by a virgin who was naked sitting
beneath a tree. In chivalry the unicorn's enemy was the lion but both could be seen
supporting the royal coat of arms.
It is thought that the unicorn may have been related to the 'bicorne', which was a two
horned animal (which was believed to prey on submissive husbands which is why it had a
very well-fed appearance according to folklore).
